It’s a sticky situation when mold winds up on your concrete. That’s because it’s so tough to get rid of. But why does it put up such a fight? There are a few reasons for this. For one, mold anchors itself to your concrete with structures called rhizoids. To remove moss from concrete, you’ll have to overpower all these rhizoids—and that’s easier said than done.
Additionally, moss roots itself deep into your concrete. Concrete is a porous material, and moss travels into these pores where it is darker and moister. Once moss has burrowed deep like this, getting rid of it is no easy task.
Preparing For Concrete Mold Removal
So you want to learn how to remove mold from concrete. First things first, you are going to need the right equipment for the job. The single most important tool is a pressure washer. This device connects to a water source, pressurizes the water, and sprays it through a hose. This allows for precise surface cleaning. In addition to a pressure washer, you will also require:
- Hose and Nozzle
- Push Broom
- Stiff-Bristle Brush
- Bleach-Water Solution (1:10 ratio)
- Respirator, Gloves, Full-Length Pants, and Closed-Toe Shoes

Then, wait fifteen minutes for it to break down mold. This will actually kill the mold, preventing it from spewing spores across the area.
Next, while wearing your respirator, use the stiff-bristle brush to disturb the mold. This will loosen its hold on the concrete so it can be more easily removed. If necessary, you can also do a second round of chemical treatment to further weaken mold.
Pressure Washing Concrete to Remove Debris
Now you have reached the final step of learning how to remove mold from concrete: pressure washing the concrete. You’ll want to set your pressure washer to 3,000 to 3,500 PSI for this work. Keep a firm grasp on the hose, and never point it at yourself to reduce the risk of injury. Position yourself two feet away from the concrete when pressure washing it, and work in an orderly, row-by-row fashion to keep track of what you’ve already cleaned and what still needs your attention.
