First, the better your concrete looks, the better your property looks. Additionally, cleaner concrete resists damage and lasts longer. Why Does Mold Appear on Concrete?

It’s frustrating when you find mold on your concrete surfaces. However, have you ever stopped and asked where this mold came from in the first place? As it turns out, mold spores have an ubiquitous presence in the outside world. They float around, seeking out new surfaces to grow on. Eventually, they sprout on these surfaces—and when it’s your concrete, you’ve suddenly got a brand-new problem to attend to.

When there is mold on your concrete, it releases new spores, making it incredibly likely that it will spread across the immediate vicinity. Not only that, but these spores will negatively affect air quality. This means you and your guests will have to deal with irritated eyes, throats, and lungs. It goes without saying that this is a bad thing!

Why Is Mold So Difficult to Remove From Concrete?

It’s a sticky situation when mold winds up on your concrete. That’s because it’s so tough to get rid of. But why does it put up such a fight? There are a few reasons for this. For one, mold anchors itself to your concrete with structures called rhizoids. To remove moss from concrete, you’ll have to overpower all these rhizoids—and that’s easier said than done.

Additionally, moss roots itself deep into your concrete. Concrete is a porous material, and moss travels into these pores where it is darker and moister. Once moss has burrowed deep like this, getting rid of it is no easy task.

Preparing For Concrete Mold Removal

So you want to learn how to remove mold from concrete. First things first, you are going to need the right equipment for the job. The single most important tool is a pressure washer. This device connects to a water source, pressurizes the water, and sprays it through a hose. This allows for precise surface cleaning. In addition to a pressure washer, you will also require:

  • Hose and Nozzle
  • Push Broom
  • Stiff-Bristle Brush
  • Bleach-Water Solution (1:10 ratio)
  • Respirator, Gloves, Full-Length Pants, and Closed-Toe Shoes

Don’t forget to give yourself enough time for the work! Learning how to remove mold from concrete will take many hours, and you don’t want to rush through the process. This will compromise the quality of the results—and why do the work if you’re not going to give it your best effort?

Clearing and Sweeping the Area

At the beginning of your pressure washing project, you’ll want to make sure the concrete surface is clear. If there are any items on it, now’s the time to pick them up and move them somewhere else. This includes outdoor furniture, decorations, and potted plants. By relocating them temporarily, you’ll make sure they don’t get your way, and you’ll also protect them from being damaged by pressurized water.

Don’t forget to sweep the concrete, too. This is important because if you don’t, the area will be covered with pebbles and other large pieces of debris. When struck by pressurized water, this debris can be transformed into projectiles. Don’t risk a cracked window or windshield. Take five minutes to sweep your concrete first!

Chemical Treatment and Brushing

Now, apply your cleaning solution of choice to the moldy area. We suggested a bleach-water solution above. You can spritz it onto the concrete using a spray bottle. Then, wait fifteen minutes for it to break down mold. This will actually kill the mold, preventing it from spewing spores across the area.

Next, while wearing your respirator, use the stiff-bristle brush to disturb the mold. This will loosen its hold on the concrete so it can be more easily removed. If necessary, you can also do a second round of chemical treatment to further weaken mold.

Pressure Washing Concrete to Remove Debris

Now you have reached the final step of learning how to remove mold from concrete: pressure washing the concrete. You’ll want to set your pressure washer to 3,000 to 3,500 PSI for this work. Keep a firm grasp on the hose, and never point it at yourself to reduce the risk of injury. Position yourself two feet away from the concrete when pressure washing it, and work in an orderly, row-by-row fashion to keep track of what you’ve already cleaned and what still needs your attention.

Eliminate mold, restore your concrete’s beauty, and enjoy the stunning results! It’s about time that your concrete was mold-free and visually appealing again.
